During my onboarding at EF, we watched a Ted Talk by Jia Jiang that resonated with me. The talk discusses strategies for handling rejection, a crucial skill in sales. Surprisingly, I found the insights from the video to be equally applicable in my personal life.
A few nights ago. my older daughter wanted to go outside right at bedtime, leading to a tantrum. Remembering Jiang’s advice, I asked her why she wanted to go outside. To my surprise, she wanted to look for seashells (despite living in Colorado, but she is 4 so I went with it). By simply understanding her perspective, I suggested an alternative—searching for seashells indoors while preparing for bed. This shift in mindset diffused the situation. Normally, I would have just said no and that it was time for bed.
I love how this technique from my professional life has extended to my personal life and informed my parenting. It’s incredible how a simple question can unlock creative solutions and foster understanding. MindsetShift HandlingRejection PersonalGrowth
